ISO 9001:2008

ISO 9000 series of standards are generic baseline standards intended for various business sector applications which will establish, document and define the requirements of the Quality Management System. ISO 9001:2008 is the current version of the Standard, It was earlier ISO 9001:2000 till it was reviewed and revised in 2008. Past versions of ISO 9000 included ISO 9002 and ISO 9003, but these are no longer in use.

TS 16949 is an automotive sector-specific QMS set of requirements which use ISO 9001:2000 (verbatim) as its base, the technical specification standard was approved and issued in March 2002. It replaced ISO/TS16949:1999 based on ISO 9001:1994, and is intended to be an alternative to QS-9000:1998 and other national automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) supplier requirements.

ISO/TS 16949:2002 aligns with existing American (QS-9000), German (VDA6.1), French (EAQF) and Italian (AVSQ) automotive quality systems standards within the global automotive industry, with the aim of eliminating the need for multiple certifications to satisfy customer requirements.

This Technical Specification standard, in conjunction with ISO 9001:2000, defines the Quality Management System requirements for the design and development, production and when relevant, installation and service of automotive-related products where customer-specified parts for production and/or service, are manufactured.

Format of ISO / TS 16949

TS 16949:2002 is built upon all the requirements, principles and concepts included in ISO 9001:2000, and goes further in specifying supplemental requirements that are specific to the automotive sector.

The TS 16949 specific clauses may

  • Include new requirements over and above ISO 9001 requirements
  • Supplement or expand on the existing ISO 9001 requirement
  • Call for prescriptive ways to address ISO or TS requirements

These automotive sector requirements also refer to automotive core tools (reference documents) such as the Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP), Production Part Approval Process (PPAP), Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA), Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) and Statistical Process Control (SPC).

ISO/TS 16949:2002 - Applicable Domains

  • ISO/TS 16949:2002 is relevant to automotive production and service part organizations
  • It is applicable only to sites where production or service parts are manufactured. (A site can be defined as: a location at which value added manufacturing processes occur. Manufacturing can be defined: as the process of making production materials, parts or assemblies, or heat treating, painting, plating services). Any tier within the supply chain can apply
  • Any potential supplier can only be accepted for registration if they have a documented request for quotation or is on a bid list of a subscribing customer
  • Organizations which have automotive and non-automotive product will require separate certification for these separate product groups. They would have ISO/TS 16949:2002 certification for their automotive activities, and ISO 9001:2000/2008 (or an alternative specified by their non-automotive customers) for the non-automotive business
  • Organizations wishing to break into the automotive market must wait until they are on an automotive customer's potential supplier list before they can progress with registration
